MSNBC’s Joy Reid claimed Thursday night that Republicans are so subservient to President Donald Trump that they would all fall in line if he told them he was selling the U.S. to Russia.
Reid made the comment during an interview with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) during a discussion about Democrats’ role in the looming spending bill fight.
Reid said Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency staff are currently the ultimate government authority.
“What’s the point of passing a budget if Republicans have already conceded that they are not in charge, that you or the Congress is not in charge of spending money?” she said. “Elon Musk is. What’s the point of passing a budget if it’s really Elon Musk’s decision whether that budget is adhered to?”
Jeffries said the slim majority Republicans have in the House could ultimately help Democrats keep the White House and Trump from overstepping.
“It only takes three House Republicans to do the right thing on behalf of the people that they represent,” he said. Reid did not share Jeffries’ optimism:
But we’ve seen, Leader Jeffries, that there aren’t three. There aren’t any. If Donald Trump announced tomorrow that he was selling the United States to Vladimir Putin personally and that we will now be owned by the Kremlin, every single Republican would say, “Yes, sir,” and vote for it. We already have seen their behavior. We’ve stopped – I think most of us – have stopped expecting any different behavior from them.
