The French politician demanding the return of the Statue of Liberty just got a brutal history lesson from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
During a press briefing, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy pressed Leavitt on the European Parliament member’s recent call for the U.S. to send back the iconic statue, claiming America no longer “deserves it.”
Leavitt’s response was swift and savage:
“My advice to that unnamed low-level French politician would be to remind them that it’s only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now. They should be very grateful.”
Gasps and groans were reportedly heard from left-wing reporters in the room, many of whom have spent years rewriting history to downplay America’s role in saving Europe from Nazi rule.
The Statue of Liberty, gifted by France in 1886, has long symbolized freedom and democracy—two things that, ironically, seem to be under attack in modern-day France, where government officials now lecture the U.S. while their own country is embroiled in political chaos.
Leavitt’s comments were a stark reminder of the hypocrisy at play: while some European elites insult America, they conveniently forget the sacrifices made by U.S. soldiers who fought and died liberating France in World War II.
Maybe it’s not America that needs to return the Statue of Liberty—maybe France just needs to remember why they gave it in the first place.
