Dick Vitale gave some good news to his many fans last August when he announced that he was cancer-free. While he was still fighting his illness he gave a speech at the 2022 ESPY Awards that reminded many of Jimmy V’s classic.
This year, just minutes before the start of the 2023 ESPY Awards, Vitale made a heartbreaking announcement on social media. He said:
“I’m sorry to share that I received tough news today from Dr. Zeitels about my throat. The tests on the tissues they removed showed that I have vocal cord cancer and will need 6 weeks of radiation to treat it.
“I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season tips off in the Fall. Dr. Z feels that scenario is entirely possible. I want to say that I have been so touched by the tweets, texts, notes, and prayers, and will ask all of you to continue to send positive vibes.
“This time last year, I was on the ESPYS stage, asking everyone to help in the cancer fight.
“This terrible disease strikes so many of our loved ones.
“And it’s now knocked on my door three different times.
“ More research will continue to help in this fight.”
He added before turning in for the night:
“Going to bed with this prayer from @RickBarnesUT. The Bible tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Lord, any concerns Dick has we ask You to give him a clear, sound mind We ask that you calm him from anxious thoughts.
Help him bring all of his anxieties to You Father. Please let Dick remember that he is not alone in his battles.
Your Word is clear.
You have commanded that we be strong and take courage in You Father. Thank you for being near, let Dick feel your Holy Presence.
Father, I ask that Dick cast all his cares on you, knowing You will sustain him with your love and not allow his confidence in You to be shaken.
Father. We ask this in Christ Jesus name. All glory be to God. Amen. Love you Dick.
