A federal judge overseeing the opening proceedings of the classified documents case against Donald Trump hit the former President with a gag order today.
Judge Bruce Reinhart agreed to a motion from the Justice Department that its case against the 45th president and issued the gag order. The ruling bars Trump from discussing the federal case with reporters or on social media. Trump is only allowed to view the evidence against him in the presence of his attorneys.
“The Discovery Materials, along with any information derived therefrom, shall not be disclosed to the public or the news media, or disseminated on any news or social media platform, without prior notice to and consent of the United States or approval of the Court,” Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart said in the order.
“Defendants shall only have access to Discovery Materials under the direct supervision of Defense Counsel or a member of Defense Counsel’s staff. Defendants shall not retain copies of Discovery Material,” wrote Reinhart.
The Justice Department made its request on Friday.
“The materials also include information pertaining to ongoing investigations, the disclosure of which could compromise those investigations and identify uncharged individuals,” the department wrote.
According to NBC:
The information prosecutors sought to guard includes “sensitive and confidential information,” including “information that reveals sensitive but unclassified investigative techniques;
Non-public information relating to potential witnesses and other third parties (including grand jury transcripts and exhibits and recordings of witness interviews);
Financial information of third parties;
“Third-party location information; and personal information contained on electronic devices and accounts.”
