Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will announce he is running for president tomorrow night during a discussion with Twitter CEO Elon Musk NBC News and Fox News are reporting.
Musk and DeSantis will host an event on Twitter Spaces Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET. It will be moderated by David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur who is a DeSantis supporter.
According to NBC, Ron will also release a campaign launch video. DeSantis, who was just in Iowa, will start to visit more early states after Memorial Day. Musk has offered kind words for DeSantis in the past but it is unknown if he will officially endorse the Florida Governor tomorrow night.
“I expect the campaign will be painting a positive vision for the country, and the entire rollout will highlight future vs. past, success vs. failure, winning vs. losing and action vs. talk. That is the frame of the race,” a source who knows the details of the launch told NBC.
According to NBC:
DeSantis’ relationship with Musk goes back to early 2021, when the two met at a dinner party in Austin, Texas, with roughly 15 people including tech investors, developers and health care industry officials, according to a GOP fundraiser who was at the meeting.
The two also have a relationship through Sacks, a major Republican donor who has been openly supportive of DeSantis and is considered to be part of Musk’s inner circle on decisions about Twitter.
A super PAC supporting DeSantis has been running ads in key primary states. DeSantis took some swipes at Trump on his recent visit to Iowa.
“Governing is not about building a brand or talking on social media and virtue signaling,” DeSantis said. “It’s ultimately about winning and about producing results.”
According to Fox News:
The popular two-term conservative governor will file formal paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) next week to declare his candidacy for president, sources familiar with the governor’s decision confirm to Fox News.
The filing by DeSantis will coincide with his meeting next week in Miami, Florida with top financial backers, one source told Fox Digital.
By law, DeSantis cannot receive or ask for contributions for a presidential campaign unless he has formally declared his candidacy.
By filing with the FEC, DeSantis would be free to solicit donations from donors at the gathering in Miami, which would set in motion a likely fundraising blitz.
