The Secret Service shot a man during an armed confrontation not far from the White House on Sunday, the agency announced in a statement.
The incident took place just after midnight, about a block away from the White House near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. A few hours earlier, local law enforcement personnel had reported a “suicidal individual” possibly traveling to Washington D.C. from Indiana, the Secret Service said.
Agents were eventually able to locate the individual’s vehicle and soon spotted a person on foot who matched the description. “As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the Secret Service said Sunday in a statement shared on X by spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The suspect was then transported to a local hospital after suffering gunshot wounds, and their condition remains unknown as of this report. No injuries were reported to Secret Service personnel or bystanders as a result of the incident.
D.C. Metropolitan Police will lead an investigation into the shooting since they are the primary agency responsible for use-of-force incidents within the District of Columbia, the Secret Service said.
President Trump was not at the White House at the time of the incident, according to his schedule. The president is expected to travel from his Mar-A-Lago Estate in Palm Beach, Florida to the White House later this evening.
