President Donald Trump announced his intention to seek a meeting with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and propose that they all cut their military budgets “in half” on Thursday.
During an Oval Office press conference, Trump declared that “one of the first meetings I wanna have is with President Xi of China, President Putin of Russia, and I want to say, ‘Let’s cut our military budget in half.’”
“And we can do that. And I think we’ll be able to do that,” added the president, who went on to affirm that he would allow Elon Musk to target “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the Department of Defense.
Prior to expressing his desire to see the American, Chinese, and Russian military budgets cut in half, Trump boasted that during his first term in office, he had gotten the two rogue powers to agree to “de-nuking.”
“President Putin and I agreed that we were gonna do it in a very big way,” said Trump. “We already have so many [nuclear weapons], you could destroy the world 50 times over, a hundred times over.”
“We’re all spending a lot of money that we could be spending on other things that are actually, hopefully much more productive,” he continued. “Hopefully there will never be a time when we need those weapons. If there’s ever a time when we need nuclear weapons, like the kind of weapons we’re building, and that Russia has, and that China has to a lesser extent but will have, that’s gonna be a very sad day. That’s gonna be probably oblivion.”
