Airlines are reportedly considering implementing weight-based fees for obese passengers, according to a report from Fox News.
The move comes as airlines look for ways to cut fuel costs and reduce their environmental impact. Finnair has already expanded a “weight data collection initiative,” which asks passengers to voluntarily weigh themselves before boarding.
“These developments indicate a growing interest in the airline industry in exploring weight-based strategies for both operational efficiency and potential future pricing models,” Fox News reported.
Meanwhile, overweight passengers are pushing back. Some have accused airlines of making seats “too small” and are demanding larger accommodations. One influencer has even launched a petition calling for airlines to increase seat sizes rather than penalizing heavier passengers.
As the debate heats up, airlines will have to decide whether to prioritize cost-saving measures or customer satisfaction.
