During her latest broadcast, Maddow reacted to Trump’s decision to recognize 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a Texas boy battling brain cancer, by making him an honorary Secret Service agent. Instead of commending the moment, Maddow called Trump’s praise “disgusting,” questioning his motives for highlighting DJ’s story.
“This is just another example of Trump using someone else’s struggle for his own political gain,” Maddow said. “It’s frankly disgusting that he’s turning this child’s illness into a spectacle.”
The backlash was swift, with critics accusing Maddow of being unnecessarily cynical about a touching gesture. Many pointed out that DJ, who has been honored by over 900 law enforcement agencies, was visibly moved by the recognition.
