During a public event, President Trump directly called out Maine Governor Janet Mills, demanding to know whether she would comply with his executive order banning biological males from competing in women’s sports.
“I understand the governor of Maine is here. Are you not gonna comply with it?” Trump asked Mills, putting her on the spot.
Mills responded, “I’m complying with state and federal laws.”
Trump, not backing down, fired back: “We are the federal law… You better do it. You better do it because you’re not gonna get any federal funding at all if you don’t.”
The tense exchange underscores the growing battle between state leaders and the Trump administration over transgender policies, particularly in sports. Mills has previously supported policies protecting transgender athletes, setting the stage for a legal and political showdown over federal funding.
